I'm looking at getting the 3 season short, which would cost only $255 and weigh only 620g! (I apologise for the overuse of exclamation marks, but this is just so incredible. Again! We love GoLite gear! The quilt idea is amazing: because this is only half a sleeping bag, you get a dramatic reduction in weight. GoLite UltraLite Quilts ( 1+ season and 3 season) If anyone out there can point us in the right direction, we're all ears! And we can't even find any Australian retailers online. (After all, everyone's body is different!). The drawback? We can't seem to find this pack anywhere in Perth, and we're hesitant to purchase anything online we haven't tested for our own personal comfort. And today in one of our favourite local shops Black Sheep was told by one of the dudes that he's heard nothing but great things about GoLite gear. It's survived bush bashing, rock scrambles, and hundred of km of walking. LL & JJ, who we now hold on as a high a pedestal as the FOFs, swear by it. If you think the price means they've sacrificed quality, think again. It has all the features you'd want in a decent pack, including right and left internal hydration tube ports. Its only 875g, holds 63L and costs just $175 (USD which at the moment is at parity with AUD). How have we never discovered this pack before? Both Black Sheep and I are crazy for it. I question how they'd stand up in wind and rain, but for hiking in places where weather forecasts reliable and no rain is expected they definitely tick the boxes of lightweight, inexpensive and easy to set up. We'd never heard of these before and without seeing or talking directly to anyone who's used them it's hard to have a strong opinion. Imagine our excitement when our friends at the Bibbulmun Track Foundation alerted us to the Ultralight Hiking Podcast! So today, instead of hanging out with my mates Geoff Hutchison and Russell Woolf on the drive to and from work, I learned some invaluable gear tips from Lynn Lobo and Jayne Jennifer (LL & JJ) on The Outdoors Station.įor those of you who might not take the time to listen to the podcast (although I recommend you do if you've ever wondered what it's like to experience bushwalking in a bushfire.), below are some of the best tips I got out of it. What can we do without? What can we replace with newer, lighter (and inevitably more expensive) substitutes? And how many hours can we wile away researching it all on the web? Half the fun of planning our hikes is all the talk and scheming that goes into how we can lighten our packs. and watch for us all over the track for the next few weeks! (As Black Sheep pointed out yesterday: does this mean we're on the way to our first double end-to-ender?!) We've generally hovered in the top five, and ten days in we've already completed over half the track. How many other teams, we figure, will be able to log 5-6 hours of exercise per member most Saturdays and Sundays? (Did we mention we're really competitive?) But being the Crazy Sheep that we are, we've managed to integrate the two, planning bushwalks for most weekends of the challenge. a VIRTUAL BIBBULMUN TRACK! So Fiona challenged us, claiming that surely this virtual competition would be easier then doing the real thing. The best part: every point takes you 10 km down. Each team gets points for every ten minutes of exercise its members complete, as well as bonus points for achieving "2 & 5" at least five days a week. The Get On Track Challenge, a joint project between Diabetes WA, the Heart Foundation and the Cancer Council WA challenges teams of two to eight people to "find thirty" (minutes of exercise) and ensure their daily intake of "2 & 5" (serves of fruit and vegetables). Our friend Fiona recently emailed us a challenge one that we've taken on board with vigour. For the next 7 or so weeks, the Crazy Sheep will be more popularly known as the Gumtree Girls.
